Skill Goals for BLSAR Training

 -To have the "ground crew" obtain the skills, knowledge, and confidence to be able to do a "sound sweep"!!!


Sound Sweep - A type of grid search that utilizes  sound attraction. A sound sweep is used
                         when searching for a responsive subject. The search spacing will have a width
                          that probably not allow visual reference with other searchers.

 In order for these searchers to be proficient at sound sweeping the searchers will have to have
the skills to :
                     - navigate on their own
                     - communicate on their own
                     - be self sufficient for 24 hrs
                     - be prepared and equipped for the task
                     - be able to maintain a GPS signal
                     - be able to flag their trail
                     - be able to accurately debrief

   If searcher has the skills to "sound sweep" then that person will meet the prerequisites
  to participate in any other type of  grid search.

   The searcher who is proficient in "sound sweeping" could be assigned to flagging
 boundaries of search areas in the field .
   The sound sweep searcher could be assigned as navigator in a visual grid search.
    The sound sweep searcher would be valuable in utilizing convergent volunteers.

Skill's and knowledge required to be a sound sweep searcher :
              - pacing
              - compass work
              - maps
              - lat& long
              - UTM
              - radio
              - field experience running compass lines
              - GPS knowledge
